Shaman are THE best 1v1 class in World of Warcraft (Blue on a blizzard forums even said it) so I figured due to the volume of 1v1 events I should write a guide on how to walk into a 1v1 event and do well.

Talent Tree

The best talent spec for a shaman in restoration/elemental. Points in restoration keep you surviving, which is important in pvp. (One of the most IMPORTANT shaman spells 'Natures Swiftness' was removed) Aside from out most important pvp spell the shaman has some decent alternatives.
Earth Shield is a great spell for pvp (mine has crit for over 1000 multiple times). My spec is WorldofWarcraft.com -> Info -> Classes -> Shaman -> Talent Calculator

Gear

Spell crit is the most important stat for shamans. The more you crit the higher your heals, and the more burst you can do. Stamina is also extremely important in PVP (the more damage you can take the longer you live lol). Mp5 is also useful (because spirit is so bugged).

Season 4 gear (complete season 4 /w jewelry) is your best bet. (blizzard made the stuff for pvp, has to be good at it)

Running one 1v1

Start off with your totems (based on the duel, always use healing stream. It heals me for over 200 every 2 seconds) Use earth shock on casters during casts only. Use the fire shock spell almost always (most dps, rogues cant go invisible while taking damage, and it causes burps with casters)

KEEP EARTH SHIELD ACTIVE! It saves lives (even when donor rouges are stunning you non stop it heals you). Use lesser heals only(fast cast).

Other than that DPS DPS DPS and you will never loose.

Arena 2v2

In arena you are the "not so squishy" healer. Your best bet is a druid or warrior as a partner. Warriors love your windfury totem and they can survive decent enough. Druids are your best friends. They can CC and keep the selves alive while you can DPS/heal yourself. A druid and a shaman are one of the BEST 2v2 teams in retail(hopefully hear)
